There is universal consensus among academic researchers that the main underlying cause of the 1997 Asian financial crisis was the poor quality of the afflicted countries’ economic institutions. Yet seven years on, the overall institutional quality of the members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Burma, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – has

The daunting task of the EU is to stand firm on its democratic principle and apply it evenly, even if this means an economic short-term disadvantage. Giving in to such incentive could amount to losing sight of a bigger picture, which could be translated into turning the back on promotion of democracy, rights of self-determination, universal human rights and equality.
