At least 50 people from in and around Maungdaw Township have been admitted to Maungdaw hospital with cholera, which broke out recently.

Most of the victims admitted to the hospital are children but their condition is steadily improving following treatment, says a health worker.

Authorities at the hospital have controlled the outbreak and spread of the disease in the hospital, but there is no information as to whether it has been checked in the township.

According to sources, the outbreak occurred due to a shortage of water and the change in season from summer to monsoon.

The disease usually breaks out in Arakan, including Maungdaw Township, in the period between the end of summer and the beginning of rainy season.
