Tensions have increased between leaders of the Karen National Union and its military wing, the Karen National Liberation Army, after members of the opposition group met secretly with Burmese government officials in Thailand, sources in Karen State told The Irrawaddy on Friday.

Rathedaung, Burma: Being in love, wanting to marry and set up home of one’s choice is considered a crime in parts of Burma. A couple in love was arrested by the Nasaka (Burma’s border security force) while preparing to cross over to Bangladesh to tie the knot. The two were sentenced to three years in prison, a close relative of they would be groom said.
