Burma is one of the least environmentally protected countries in south-east Asia, and deforestation is acute as a consequence of timber exploitation and poor agricultural methods. Life should be simple for local man U Tin Naing: in the town of Hsipaw, where he lives, he grows enough food to feed his family and keeps his house in good repair with timber from the abundant teak forests.
