Burmese state television now says more than three-hundred-and-fifty people were killed by a powerful cyclone that hit the Irrawaddy delta region of the country on Saturday.

The authorities say more than twenty-thousand houses were damaged or destroyed.

Electricity and phone links are still cut off in the main city, Rangoon and water supplies have been badly hit.

Transport has been seriously disrupted by fallen trees, collapsed bridges and fuel shortages.

Correspondents say it may be many days before the full extent of the damage is known, especially in rural areas.
