France’s foreign minister said Wednesday the UN Security Council should force Myanmar’s military junta to allow aid supplies into the cyclone-hit country.

Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said the UN concept of a “responsibility to protect,” in cases where a state fails in its duties towards its population, could form the basis of a Security Council resolution.

“We are trying to see at the United Nations if we can use this responsibility to protect for there to be a resolution that imposes the passage (of aid) to the Myanmar government,” Kouchner told reporters.
