Thousands of people in Pegu sought refuge in schools and temples after heavy rain and floods forced them from their homes.About 5,000 houses were evacuated when flooding threatened to inundate them.
A Buddhist monk who helped the evacuees with food and shelter said they were staying at government schools and Buddhist monasteries.
He said that although the water level had receded by Wednesday residents were still concerned about the prospect of more rain.
Large areas of Pegu and Magwe Divisions, Shan and Mon States are flooded, and some highways are under water.
