Berlin German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday offered support for democratic change in Myanmar, during a telephone conversation with the country’s opposition politician Aung San Suu Kyi, according to a statement from the government in Berlin.

The chancellor praised the Nobel laureate for her peaceful opposition to Myanmar’s former authoritarian regime.

She urged the newly formed government to ensure the release of political prisoners, a national reconciliation process and complete recognition of all political parties including Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy.

After her release from house arrest last year, Suu Kyi called in a German radio interview for greater support from Germany and Europe.
