Myanmar on Tuesday released 83 Thais convicted of illegal entry and they are expected to return to Thailand this afternoon.

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said they are among more than 500 prisoners pardoned by the Myanmar government on Monday.

Thai diplomats based in Myanmar are in Kawthaung town, where they were imprisoned, to arrange for their return to Ranong, the spokesman said. They were expected to return to the southern province this afternoon, he added.

They are among the 92 Thais found guilty by a Myanmar court of illegal entry and encroachment on its territory in early July while clearing land for a new plantation.
