The Japanese government have named Nippon Foundation Chairman Yohei Sasakawa as its special representative to work on ethnic reconciliation in Myanmar.Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a news conference on February 19 that with the appointment of Sasakawa, Japan “will work to facilitate the process of reconciliation between Myanmar’s government and ethnic minorities”.

Sasakawa will represent the Government of Japan in contacting the Myanmar government, ethnic minorities and the governments of other countries.

The Nippon Foundation, a Tokyo-based organization, has long assisted Myanmar through various philanthropic causes.

Currently, up to 400 bags of rice per month are supplied by the foundation to to each of the Karen National Union’s brigades (Nos. 1 to 7], while the New Mon State Party is given 1,000 bags per month via Mawlamyaing.
