Colonel Padoh Saw Roger Khin from the KNU Defence Department said that the KNU Commander-in-Chief, General Johnny will personally resolve issues between Border Guard Force (BGF) and KNU (Karen National Union). The two groups were involved in an encounter on August 16.
“It is expected that the issue would be discussed and resolved during the three year anniversary celebration of the BGF. We will have details only after General Johnny returns”, Colonel Saw Roger Khin told Mizzima.
The third anniversary of the BGF was celebrated on August 20, at Shwe Koh Ko camp in Myawaddy township.
The encounter happened on August 16 between 20 soldiers from Battalion 102 which operates under KNU Division (5) Phapon district and 15 soldiers from BGF Battalion 1014 under the command of Lieutenant AB Lwin.
The BGF News and Information Secretary, Major Naing Maung Zaw told Mizzima that the encounter happened at 3 am. A soldier was killed, and a 2nd corporal and soldier sustained injuries. They have been sent to Mawlamyaing General Hospital for treatment .
Saw Roger Khin told Mizzima that although it has been reported that the KNU acquired an M79 and about 20 bombs from BGF after the encounter, they are still trying to get confirmation.
The area was occupied only by the KNU before ceasefire. However, after the ceasefire agreement was signed, the BGF tried to set up camps in the area. The problem started because of the situation, he said.
The BGF said that the problem is a minor one between low ranked cadres and they believe it will not impact peace process.
“Although, it will not affect the peace process, it should not have happened. The KNU Commander-in-Chief has also given assurance that he will investigate and take action on the personnel who were involved in the encounter”, said Major Naing Maung Zaw.
On May 28, a Committee for Reunification of six separate Karen armed groups was formed at the Koh Ko Camp in Kawkayeik Township. The Committee was formed to resolve armed conflicts within Karen armed groups peacefully.
