Su Aung, chairman of the ASEAN Public Forum Organizing Committee, announced during a press conference on 21 October that the Committee does not have enough funds to properly prepare for the ASEAN Public Forum (APF), which is scheduled to take place in Myanmar in April of 2014.
“We still don’t have adequate funding for this event, and the government has said that it will not give us any financial help,” Su Aung told Mizzima. “However, we expect that it will provide us with some level of assistance.”
The total estimated cost of the Forum isapproximately USD$300,000.
The Organizing Committee also expects to receive supporting funds from international NGOs.
The ASEAN Public Forum has been convening annually since 2005, and representatives from nine ASEAN member nations will take part in it this year. The member country that holds ASEAN chairmanship usually hosts it.
Myanmar assumed chairmanship of ASEAN on 10 October.
