A ceremony at Mandalay’s Shwe Nan-daw Monastery next week will mark the start of a partnership between Myanmar and the United States to preserve historic buildings, the US embassy said in a statement released on February 7.

Myanmar’s Culture Minister U Aye Myint Kyu and US ambassador Mr Derek Mitchell will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the monastery, also known as ShweKyaung, on February 14, the statement said.

The ceremony is due to begin at 3pm, it said

The two-year, multi-phased project to preserve historic buildings will involve the embassy, the Ministry of Culture and a US-based non-profit conservation organization, World Monuments Fund, the statement said.

“The project builds on several initiatives by the embassy to work with the government and civil society groups on promoting respect for the diverse cultures and religions of this country,” it said, adding that the project is supported by the US State Department’s Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
