Against a backdrop of simmering tensions with Bangladesh, Myanmar has concluded its largest naval show of naval strength in recent years.
Dubbed ‘Sea Shield 2014’, the combined fleet exercise was held in the third week of March in the Andaman Sea off Myanmar’s southwestern coast and ended on 22 March with a fleet review presided over by armed forces (Tatmadaw) Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at Cocogyun, near Yangon.
The maritime war games appear to have been the largest exercises since 2009 and, according to local television reports, involved various manoeuvres and live-fire drills by 11 Myanmar Navy (MN) warships.
