Leader of democracy movement of Myanmar and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, arrived in Kathmandu Friday on a three-day visit to Nepal.

Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi arrives in Kathmandu for a three-day visit, Friday. NN/RHShe came here to attend an international conference titled ‘The Future of Democratic Socialism’ organized by BP Thought Academy in the capital.

On behalf the Government of Nepal, Minister for Forests and Soil Conservation Mahesh Acharya welcomed her at Tribhuvan International Airport. Academy chair Haribol Bhattarai, Nepali Congress leader Dr Sashank Koirala and Academy general secretary Devendra Prakash Poudel, among other officials, were also at the airport to receive Ms Suu Kyi.

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is the keynote speaker in the international conference to be held on Saturday. The Academy is organising the conference on the occasion of the birth centenary of the popular leader the late BP Koirala.

During her stay in Nepal, Ms Suu Kyi will pay courtesy call on President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and meet with leaders from political parties. She will also be accorded a civic reception on behalf the Nepali people.

In course of participating in the BIMSTEC summit held in Myanmar last March, Prime Minister Koirala had invited Suu Kyi to visit Nepal. The government has decided to accord this an official visit.

Nepal’s democracy movement was supported by Burma since her father’s time. The late BP Koirala had asked for help from Burma for the supply of arms for the Democracy Movement of 2007 BS which was led by the Nepali Congress. Burma had provided that support.

She will also visit Lumbini and BP Koirala Memorial Museum in Sundarijal.

Also coming to attend the conference are, among others, the General Secretary of Socialist International Luis Ayala, Prof. Ananda Kumar of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Prof. Thomas Meyar of Germany and Prof. Dr Jullian Bou of Belgium, according to the Trust.
