China has started a newspaper in Yunnan Province to serve the interests of an estimated population of 50,000 Myanmar-language residents in the region, says the state-owned Xinhua newspaper.

The first issue was launched on Dec. 4, targeting Myanmar nationals working in the area.

The weekly, called Paukphaw, will be distributed free and is owned by Tuanjie Newspaper of Dehong Dai and Jinpo Autonomous Prefecture.

Paukphaw means “the friend,” but specifically defines a “Chinese friend” in the Myanmar language.
