Chit Lin Myaing Company will scrap its plans to develop a 5,000-tonne cement factory in Mi Kayin village with the Chinese Yunnan provincial government, announced its owner, Colonel Saw Chit Thu of the border guard force.

“We told villagers about the project in advance. I said if they opposed the project, I would inform the Yunnan province government to stop it. So I officially stopped the project,” said the colonel.

According to villager Saw Nyan Win, Myanmar Cement Mineral Production and Myanmar Ji Dong Cement companies came to Mi Kayin village in 2013 and 2014 to develop a cement factory project but it had been cancelled because of residents’ opposition.

More than 1,000 Mi Kayin village tract residents held a religious meeting to pray for the termination of the project on March 29.

Major General Saw Johnny, commander-in-chief of the Kayin National Liberation Army, said it was best to scrap the project. The organisation would always stand up for the people, he said.
