U.S. oil and gas major Chevron Corp has put its Myanmar gas block stakes worth an estimated $1.3 billion up for sale, banking sources familiar with the matter said, in what would mark the biggest M&A transaction involving the country’s assets.

Vietnamese telecom company Viettel said on Monday it plans to form a consortium with two Myanmar companies to invest a combined $1.5 billion in Myanmar’s telecoms sector if it wins the country’s fourth, and last, telecom licence.

Former general and deputy minister for Home Affairs, U Maung Maung Ohn, was appointed Chief Minister of Rakhine State in 2014, replacing U Hla Maung. Although the Arakan National Party won a majority of seats in the Rakhine assembly last November, the National League for Democracy appointed as chief minister, the chair of its state branch, U Nyi Pu, an ethnic Rakhine.

President U Htin Kyaw pardoned 83 political prisoners on the country’s traditional New Year on Sunday, a spokesman from his office said, as the fledgling civilian-led administration seeks to cast off the shackles of nearly half a century of military rule.

State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday called for a constitutional amendment that would create a federal democratic union that includes all Myanmar’s ethnic groups in order to bring peace to the Southeastern Asian nation racked by decades of civil war.
