The government has paid 352.583 million kyat compensation to farmland owners whose 172 acres of land were seized by the Ministry of Construction in 2003 to build the outer city road in Pyinmana, Nay Pyi Taw.

The European Union has requested an investment protection agreement with Myanmar which is being criticized by local NGOs in the country, according to a report on the ScandAsia website on 28 June. The report said that the agreement was intended to secure investors from the EU in case of dispute so the dispute could be raised in an international court of law.

More than 6,400 acres of confiscated land in Ayeyawady Region has been returned to its rightful owners with Vice President U Henry Van Thio calling on authorities in regions and states to speed up work in order to release remaining lands, state media reported yesterday.

Villagers in Karen State are less than ecstatic that more than 232 acres of farmland, confiscated by the Burma Army and other government officials will be returned to them. The National League for Democracy Government’s Land Management Group, based in Karen State, said the land would be returned to its rightful owners.

The Norwegian state owned company, Statkraft Norfund Power Invest or SN Power, concluded an MOU for a project known as the Middle Yeywa dam with the previous government in July 2014. This dam is set to be built in a location that has been identified as “seismically hazardous” because it is close to the Kyaukyan fault line.
