Sein Kyaw Hlaing, a veteran Burmese journalist who previously worked in exile for the BBC Burmese Service and is currently a contributor to Radio Free Asia, issued a statement over the Internet on Sunday denying that he had taken any airplane flight to Rangoon or been detained at the airport and then interrogated by Burmese authorities at the Aung Tha Pyay interrogation center. Reporters Without Borders has confirmed that access to a number of previously banned foreign news websites including Youtube, BBC, Reuters, The Bangkok Post, Straits Times, Radio Free Asia, Irrawaddy, Democratic Voice of Burma, and the Burmese version of Voice of America has been unblocked. TATMADAW representatives in the Amyotha Hluttaw have weighed into the political debate on an unlikely topic: spelling. Major/Captain (officiating) Soe Hein Naung – who has a masters degree in Myanmarsar – submitted a proposal on September 8 urging the government to “supervise” spelling of the Myanmar language, particularly in the media. It was the first proposal submitted by any of the 178 appointed military personnel in the Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw. (more…)
